Tallahassee Hemerocallis Society
Meeting of October 27, 2001
Minutes

The Tallahassee Hemerocallis Society met on Saturday, October 27, 2001, at the Leon County Agricultural Center, William Knight presiding. Bill called the meeting to order and recognized Jack and Iris Turner who are long-term club members. Jack Turner was in fact the first male member of the THS. President Knight also introduced visitors Barbara Doren, Dianna and Durwood Culver, and Ben and Betty Graves.

The treasurer, Opal Howell, announced that she would accept dues for the coming calendar year. The group voted earlier this year to raise dues to $10 per person. A motion was made and seconded to set dues for a family at $15. The motion carried.

Bill Knight thanked Dot Ryan for her donation of daylilies for the plant sale that day. Barbara Boynton presented our speaker with a dinner-plate hibiscus she grew from seed. Bill Knight, Tim Bell, Dot Ryan, Barbara Boynton, Frasier Bingham, and other anonymous members donated door prizes.

Bill reported that the nominating committee was presenting a slate of officers for the next two years. Those nominated were Angela Smith, President; Maryzell Roberts, Vice President; Opal Howell, Treasurer; and Donna Warlick, Secretary. There being no nominations from the floor, these nominees were elected by acclimation.

President Knight reported to the club about the Litchgate Cottage. The THS has been asked to donate and plant 30 to 40 daylilies for this home, which may be a potential meeting place. No action was taken at this time. It is anticipated that Litchgate staff will contact us again.

Dot Ryan spoke to the group about meeting times. She suggested that the day and night groups meet as one on Saturdays. Bill Knight appointed a committee to look into this proposal. The committee is composed of Maryzell Roberts, Dot Ryan, Angela Smith and Betty Ruth Gandy. Angela proposed that a ballot be mailed to all members soliciting a vote on preferences for meeting times. The group approved her proposal.

Angela Smith, Chairperson for the 2002 Region 12 spring meeting, reported progress made toward that meeting. Two buses have been reserved (at $700 each). The University Center Club has been reserved for the Saturday night dinner. We have accrued about $1500 through plant sales towards the $3000 necessary. Bill Knight mentioned that he had discussed a Friday evening event with Mary Alma Lang. The affair will be held at the home of Dave and Mary Alma Lang.

Bill Knight reminded the group of the excellent web page the club has which is maintained and updated regularly by Rita Meng.

Donna Warlick mentioned that she had been contacted by Jo Ann Little in Orlando about off-scape display boards, as the Central Florida Society is interested in acquiring some. Donna suggested that we sell them some of ours, since we do not plan to use more than one or two at shows in the future. There was no objection from the club, so Donna will call Ms. Little to discuss the possibilities.

Opal Howell distributed a sign up sheet for people who wish to buy a copy of Eureka through the club.

Opal then introduced Tim Bell of Bell’s Daylily Garden in Sycamore, Georgia. Tim has a beautiful garden and has registered some of his seedlings. Tim showed the group slides of his garden and his own cultivars.

Afterward, door prizes were given away, and the meeting adjourned.
