Meeting Minutes For June 30, 2001

The Tallahassee Hemerocallis Society met on June 30, 2001 at Esposito Garden Center, Tallahassee, Florida. President Bill Knight called the meeting to order and thanked those people who worked in the show, and Rita Meng and Angela Smith for their work on the website (thsgardens.org).

Bill announced that the main business of the meeting was to approve a budget for the 2002 Region 12 spring meeting, which will be held in Tallahassee on May 17, 18 & 19, 2002.

Opal Howell presented a treasurer’s report showing a balance of $5139.19. Opal presented a list of the usual expenses of the club. Generally we spend about $1300 each year for printing and postage, speakers, insurance, storage room, dues to AHS and registration with the Florida Department of State. Dues of $5.00 per person provide an income of $500 per year. The club voted to spend $1279.25 for expenses as outlined in a 2002 budget presented by the treasurer.

President Knight stated that Angela Smith has volunteered to serve as Chair for the Regional Meeting, and that he and Donna Warlick will co-chair the annual daylily show. Bill announced that 6 member’s gardens will be toured as a function of the regional meeting. Those members are Jack & Mary Ann VanKleunen, Keith & Toma Collinsworth, Emily Jennings, Opal Howell, Dot Ryan, and Barbara Boynton.

Angela Smith proposed a budget for the regional meeting. She first explained the structure of AHS, regions and Region 12, and mentioned that we have hosted 2 recent regional meetings in Tallahassee, in 1995 and 1998. In 1998 we had bus tours of members’ gardens and spent about $10,000 (for the show and regional together).

Mary Ann VanKleunen mentioned that Madison Travel, Madison, Florida, has buses at reasonable prices for tours. She said that we should contact Ronny there and mention a referral by Jerome Ridaught of the Lake City daylily club. There was discussion and agreement to make the bus tours available to the public if possible. Mary Ann also said she had talked with staff at the Wakulla Springs lodge about a luncheon there on the Saturday of our regional meeting. The Lodge dining room will not be available for us.

NancyAnn Marr introduced herself and said she is a printer and graphic artist. She offered to develop a cookbook, calendar or other items to assist with the regional meeting.

Angela Smith mentioned that Ted Petit has agreed to be our speaker at the banquet on Saturday, May 18. Opal mentioned that Dr. Petit has recently published a daylily book, which Angela suggested that the club purchase for the local library. Forty-five dollars were donated for the purchase.

Members discussed raising dues to $10 per person beginning in January 2002. A motion was made, seconded and carried to increase the dues.

Angela presented a meeting schedule and income and expense projections for the regional meeting and the show. Contained in the show expenses is about $400 for new permanent table skirts to be made by Louise Jones. Other show expenses are routine. Angela reported that the expenses would be funded as we go and will be cut back as necessary. She stated that the club will have $2500 on hand after show expenses have been paid and plant sale proceeds totaled. A motion was made, seconded and carried to approve the budget as presented. That budget shows estimated expenses of $13500 (for both the show and regional meeting) and estimated revenues of $8175 from the regional meeting and show. This leaves a deficit of $4225 which will be funded by plant sales throughout the year and club treasury.

Bill Knight announced that Popularity Poll ballots are due September 1. Opal Howell showed members the Garden Judges Ballot and encouraged members to become garden judges.

There was discussion of what daylilies are blooming now, and it was agreed that we would obtain some late bloomers for the next plant sale. The next club meeting will be in September.

The meeting was adjourned.
